As you go about your get healthy regimen, whether it’s to burn fat, build muscle, or simply improve your health, it pays to know your body type.
What does body type mean? Body type refers to the natural tendency of your body to manage its body weight and composition. Ever notice how some people tend to be naturally thin no matter what they eat while others will pack on body fat merely by looking at food? (or so it seems!)
This is body type at work. There are three different body types to know about and by understanding each one and the characteristics, you can better plan your approach.
Here are the ones to know.
Ectomorph
This is essentially someone who is thin no matter what they eat or do. They’re typically tall and lanky looking and may be one of those people who just can’t sit still. Always moving, they burn up a high amount of calories on a day to day basis.
The ectomorph has a metabolic rate that tends to speed up the more food they eat, so for them, putting on weight of any kind – fat or muscle – tends to be a real challenge.
This type of person does best on a very high calorie diet, focusing on calorie dense foods whenever possible. Their workouts should focus on lower volume exercises, done with very heavy weight in the lower rep range.
Ectomorphs may include some cardio, however it should be minimized as too much cardio can mean even more calories are burned.
Endomorph
This body type is the one that tends to store body fat easily. They’re typically a little rounder looking more like that of an apple or pear depending on where they store their body fat.
These people will need more cardio, will do well on a circuit-style strength training program, and will need to monitor their calorie intake more closely to ensure they are not gaining more weight.
Endomorphs will find it’s more effort to maintain their body weight, but the good news is that the more consistent they are with their workout regimen which should include strength training, the easier they’ll be able to achieve this as muscle burns calories at a faster pace than body fat does.
Mesomorph
Finally, you have the mesomorph. This is someone who tends to be naturally muscular and athletic. They’re usually a bit short and stalky looking and while they can certainly gain fat if they eat too much, they don’t do so readily.
They tend to build muscle quite easily if weight training is performed, so do well on a conventional program with free weights and some cardio training added in.
They can eat a moderate calorie diet and often respond well to a higher carb intake thanks to all the muscle mass they possess.
There can also be a combination of the different body types which form hybrids. This means that one can have an upper body that is mesomorphic yet the lower half of the body is endomorphic, or vice versa.
One thing for sure is that ALL body types benefit greatly from clean eating, cardio and strength training.
So there you have a closer look at the three body types. Which body type are you? Once you can identify this, you can better plan your program around it.
Nice!!!great to learn this. I am am endomorph, currently on eat clean program, am a mother of 1,realised that my healthy is my responsibility.

Thank you so much Jane for always informing us of how to keep fit and healthy. Personally i have managed to loose almost 8kgs by simply following your guidance. Am so excited because am a second time CS mom last one having been 10months ago. Am hoping by the time my son turns 1yr in December by stubborn tummy would have responded. I will keep following your challenges and guidance. Thanks

Great information
Thank you for the information. My body type is Endomorph, it’s the hardest to loose weight and I usually give up easily. Especially the fat on my stomach it’s the hardest to loose.
Good information. When you understand your body type, you go at your pace without comparing yourself to others. What are some foods or excersices that increase metabolism?
I am an endomorph I now know I need to burn more calories by doing cardio and by eating clean. Thank you Jane
Been following your posts for over two years now and I’ve learnt a lot. I didn’t know women could do strength training till i saw you do it and write about it and now its a thing i’ve embraced especially because I have stubborn weight. 4 months postpartum, hoping to come back with my before and after very soon.
Hey Jane
Thanks for this info
My body type is endomorph apple shaped. I tend to put weight more on my upper body.
I have been doing more of jogging and strength training but with this info I now understand I should add more of cardio.
I am working on my eating.
The information is so helpful, my body type is too but after doing the detox plan and eating clean, I’m able to maintain my body and control my eating.
Thanks so much for the wonderful work.
Thank you Jane for your advice, which i have been following. I realize i am an Endomorph and I now know how to handle my body weight. Good news! I finished my detox last week on Friday, I feel lighter ( I lost 4.5kg) and my taste buds are more friendly to healthy foods.
Being an Endomorph its quite hard to keep in track but i remind myself i have to push for what i want when i want it. The best should come now not later that i have come to accept and working towards it.
This information is greatly helpful. i had always wondered why my friend who eats as much as double what i eat is so slim yet i who eat less am so big. I now understand is because am an endomorph.
hi Jane great read.
I just did my 10 day challange and am starting gym tomorrow.I am yet to know which category I lie in the second or the third.
I noticed that the past 2 years I added 7kg which is understandable because i was doing nothing no walking no running. In short I was lazy, imagne straight after the challenge I lost 5kgs I wonder what going to the gym would do to my weight and health in general.
Looking forward to a great healthy journey with you
cecilia

I am definitely an endomorph, i tend to put on weight easily especially in the middle and keeping and maintaining my weight is a big struggle. But i have learnt that i need to be consistent with my calorie check to maintain when i eventually lose the weight. Thanks for the informative article Jane ❤
A bit of psychology there. Learnt this as a 2nd year student at UON. Thanks for the reminder Jane! Im 100% ectomorph ?..all gym trainers ought to know this! Currently working on muscle building, toning and losing some belly fat. This info is quite helpful! Thanks Jane.

I have achieved alot through the Facebook pages and the amazing women in those groups.

Thank you namesake and may Jehovah continue to give you wisdom and insight to help others like you do.
Norah.
THIS IS A GOOD READ.THANK YOU. QUICK QUESTION THOUGH I WOULD LOVE TO TRY TO TRY THE 10 DAY DETOX CHALLENGE BUT FOR A LONG TIME SINCE HIGH SCHOOL I CANNOT STOMACH FRUITS(MANGOES,AVOCADOS,BANANAS) SO SHOULD I JUST STICK TO EXERCISE.

Thanks jane for this info at least i now know my body type which is Endomorph, currently i’m 83kgs 5’3 tall and 25yrs old. I am obese 1 and last week i diagonesed with arthirits, Doc’s advice is that i should loose weight like 20kgs or so, avoid certain foods like wheat, meat, alcohol etc, take lots of water n do exercises. Its very stressing for me but i believe that if i do the right thing then arthirits will be a thing of the past.
I know 21days of change will really help me in loosing weight the right way, i hope that i win the calorie counter watch so that i can be able to monitor calories lost during my workouts. Thanks and stay blessed.
Hi Jane, thanx so much for the information, you ave been of great help to me,am not so good in working out but every time I hear from you I get encouraged to work harder to gain my dream body, mine is just the tummy am not big .may God bless you so much.

Interesting article. I was unaware of my body type until i realized from your piece that i am endomorph. I always try though to balance my nutrition and exercises. As i am currently p.g i hope to maintain my nutrition and a bit of Zumba..Thanks Jane

Thank You Jane . I am an Endomorph. I don’t eat a lot of food, I walk a lot and drink more than 8 glasses in a day but i tend to lose weight slowly compared to my friend who eats a lot of food, doesn’t exercise but she has maintained her weight
Hello Jane,
This is very informative. I seriously feel it being a endomorph, I’ve worked out for over 6 months with minimal visible change.
But I believe in the process… I’ll keep at it.
I believe i have Endomorph body type. I easily put on weight yet very hard to lose it. It takes me a great deal of cardio and interval training to get to where i want my body to be. I actually have never ever read about body types so this was some education right here, thankyou
Hi Jane i am endomorph so i have to hit the gym
And watch wat i eat.
Thank you for the information, I now know my type. Stay blessed
I am definitely an endomorph. I do lots of cardio strength training and clean eating with portion control. Though it takes time to loose the weight I definitely loose a lot of inches and the outcome is totally worth it.My motto is CONSISTENCY
Quite an educative read. Sometimes it is very difficult for us endomorphs to try to explain to people that we don’t eat as much as one would think. Earlier when i was in primary school, our religious teacher used to quote bible verses of how unclean ‘plumb’ people are. It was traumatising to hear such at such a tender age.
People should understand that we dont choose not to metabolize as fast as they do. If we did, i’m pretty sure some of us would not be struggling at the gym and with diet regimes.
Thank you Jane.
Ps. I’m a male reader.
Thank you Jane for this info. My health is my greatest wealth. I am the Endomorph type and its frustrating. I tend to loose weight but gain is back superfast. I need to loose around 15kgs asap. Thank you too for the E-book. This ill for sure read and monitor my intakes especially this Christmas. Am doing badly on weight.
God richly bless you for reaching out to save lives & i mean literally save lives since weight kills.

Hello
This journey has not been easy for me coming out of my comfort zone. It was not easy losing weight then gaining it all back even with my miscarriage and job loss, got so depressed but I had to get my life up and running continued on strong. I was 87kgs now am 79kgs not yet there. Through your weekly information am able to say that am greatful.
Standing at about 5’4, naturally athletic and a bias towards weight gain, I think I might be a hybrid of a Mesomorph and Endomorph. Atleast that is what I believe. I stand to be corrected.
That explains why jogging works for me. More cardio
My ectomorph self could do with some muscle gain. I’m sure my nutrition, although healthy, does not work for my body type. Time for change. Help a brother out Jane.
Thanx Jane, now that i know am endomorph,i know what to do to lose weight and also build muscle..you truly are an inspiration

Now that i know, i will incorporate more cardio into my workouts and eat according to my body type.

Thanks a lot for the information. This is an eye opener. In as much as we work as a team, we must take care of the individual differences.
